I went to the movies with my middle daughter, Krissy (the basketball star), who is home for Spring Break on Saturday and saw Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. We had fun laughing before the movie about being incredibly loud. It was fun spending the afternoon together.
The movie brought back all sorts of memories….of course 9/11, and the aftermath of 9/11, the stories and how close it was to people I knew from growing up in New Jersey, and places I had been to, like when I visited my grandma in New York or worked in Manhattan one summer.
On the way to the movie we heard Kelly Clarkson singing “What Doesn’t Kill You….” And the lyrics have been stuck in my head all weekend. ” What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, stand a little taller, doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone.” I began to realize that all we go through does just that-it makes you stronger. And each thing you go through although difficult at the time does pass and you are stronger because of it. I know I am a whole lot stronger than I used to be. I also like to think I am a whole lot smarter than I used to be. Back when I was in High School and College and then working I felt like I knew it all. I thought I was smarter than lots of people. But I wasn’t. I had yet to experience life.
You don’t learn life in a book, or at school. You learn life by the experiences you have. Good experiences and bad ones too. All those things add up to who you are and even then you are not there yet becasue you still have more to do.
And Kelly, it is true, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, it makes you better and that’s okay with me!
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, Just me, myself and I What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger Stand a little taller Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone
