Family-the word family means many different things.  When I was growing up, everyone in my town had a big family – usually there was a mom, a dad and many, many children, sometimes 11 or more.  They all lived together in a small 3-4 bedroom house and amazingly shared one bathroom.  Very few of the families I knew were divorced.  Everyone knew everyone’s business; in fact, other moms could yell at you if you did something wrong.

But times have changed and so has the idea of family.  Oh, there are still some of those traditional families with a mom and a dad and 2.5 kids, but there are also the single parent families or the stay at home parent families, the extended family that may have moved with the kids back into their parents’ house, or the family with grandparents living in the house.

The traditional family may have changed but the idea of family hasn’t.  A family is now described as a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not or as a social unit consisting of one or more adults together with the children they care for.

So what kind of family do you have?  Face it; even if it isn’t exactly the family you dreamed of, it is your family. You may be a single parent, parents of adult children who have moved back home, a soccer mom, a working mom or that elusive traditional family with a mom, a dad and 2.5 kids.  Your family is what it is, accept that, and know that it probably won’t change.   Embrace your family, laugh, love and cry with your family and enjoy each and every moment, as God intended.
